Question

You have been asked to help in the design of a ski jump at a resort in the Snowy Mountains. Skiers of mass 58.1 kg will start by pushing themselves away from the starting gate at a speed 0.4 m/s. They then slide down the virtually frictionless slope before being launched into the air by a ramp. The ramp is a height 6.0 m below the starting gate.

How fast do you expect the skiers to be moving when they fly off the ramp? Type your answer in metres per second, to at least one decimal place. You may assume that g=9.8 m/s.

Explanation / Answer

loss in potential energy when they fly off the ramp = 58.1*9.8*6 = 3416.28 J change in KE = loss in PE .5mv^2 - .5m(.4)^2 = 3416.28 J v = 10.85 m/s
