inverted
(c) Locate the image when the object distance is 10.0 cm. (Indicate the side of the mirror with the sign of your answer.)
_______cm
Describe the properties of the image when the object distance is 10.0 cm. (Select all that apply.)
real
virtual
upright
inverted
Explanation / Answer
Part A)
The radius of curvature for a mirror is twice the focal length
R = 2(54) = 108 cm
Part B)
Using the formula
1/f = 1/p +1/q
1/54 = 1/100 + 1/q
q = 117.4 cm (in front of the mirror since its positive)
Since q is positive, the image is real. Also, if we use the magnification formula of M = -q/p, we see that the magnification would come out negative which indicates the image is inverted.
Part C)
1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/54 = 1/10 + 1/q
q = -12.c cm (in back of the mirror due to negative)
The negative indicates that the image is virtual (in back of the mirror). The magnification will come out positive, so the image is upright.
