Question
The animation above shows a representation of a particular longitudinal standing wave that is set up in a pipe which is closed at one end. A somewhat simpler transverse representation of the standing wave is shown in red, above the pipe. The speed of sound is 340 m/s, and the frequency of the standing wave is 650 Hz. The animation shows the wave in slow motion.
What is the length of the pipe?
I'm using the L=nv/4f formula but cant get it right
Explanation / Answer
we can see that the length of the tube is L = 1.25*w where w= wavelength of the wave. now given v = 340 and f= 650 =>we know v = f*w => w = 340/650 = 0.523 m => the length of the tube is L = 0.6538 m = 65.4 cm (approximately)
