Question
if the image isnt clear enough...it reads...
------As you fly past the earth, you measure that a day appears to be 48 hours long. What is your speed with respect to the earth?-----
I need clear steps to solve the equation and any equations used in the process. Thanks! lifesaver coming!
please comment if image is not good enough
Explanation / Answer
let distance travelled be s km let speed of earth be v km/hr => t = s/v => 24 = s/v ................(1) let the speed at which person is flying be u he must be flying in the direction of rotation of earth in order to make duration of day longer => 48 = s/|v - u| ....................(2) divide (1) by (2) 1/2 = |v - u|/v => 1/2 = 1 - u/v => u/v = 1/2 so fliers speed is 1/2 of earth speed
