Question
A strain of s Sreptoccens p ampicillin and tetracyc line. The tollowing results were obtained Zone of Inhibition around armpicillin disk 25 mm Zone of Inhibition around tetracycline disk 21 mm Explain why the physician prescrihed tetracycline instead of ampicillin FOR FURTHER RESEARCH Most microorganisms that cause disease in humans are mesophiles. However, poorly maintained hot tubs can be a source of thermophiles that can cause human infections. List at least three species of thermophilic bacteria that can cause discasc in humansExplanation / Answer
The zone of inhibition formed around tetracycline is smaller (21 mm) compared to the zone of inhibition around ampicillin disk which is 25 mm. This indicates that Streptococcus pyogens is more susceptible to ampicillin when compared to tetracyclin. But the reason for prescribing tetracycline is that the effectiveness of tetracycline is enough to clear the infection and no strong antibiotic is needed. Starting with highly effective antibiotics might lead to the formation of antimicrobial resistance as a result of which the antibiotic becomes ineffective after some period of time.
Clostridium is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria, which includes several significant human pathogens
Clostridium thermocellum
Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum
Clostridium thermosulfurogenes
These three thermophilic species of Clostridium produces extremely heat resistant spores and hence can cause disease in humans.
