Question

Sam is taking his girlfriend Sally out for a ride in his boat. He starts out at rest. He accelerates with an acceleration of 0.168 m/s^2 for 85.6 s. At that time Sally decides they are going fast enough and the boat moves at constant speed for a distance of 120 m. Then Sally decides she want to go a little faster and they accelerate at 0.175 m/s^2 for another 38.3 s.

A) What is the final velocity of the boat?
B) What is the total displacement of the boat?
C) What is the total time the boat moves?

Explanation / Answer

1st accn gives v=0.168*85.6=14.38m/s
2nd accn gives v= 14.38+.175*38.3= 21m/s------------final velocity

1st accn gives s=(v^2-u^2)/2*a=615.4m

At const veloc s=120m

2nd accn gives s=(v^2-u^2)/2*a=669.2m

Total displcmnt=1404.6m

1st time=85.6s

2nd time=120/14.38=8.34s

3rd time=38.3s

Total time=132.24s
