Q.A3 For the operational excellence of a CNC miling machine:- Describe the concept of single minute exchange of dies (SMED) and the crucial requirement to incorporate this methodology into the manufacturing process. (a) (5 marks) Distinguish between intemal and external work in association with the set-up of a CNC milling machine tool. Describe the structured procedure for evaluating and implementing the single minute exchange of die (SMED) concept Clearly demonstrate the objective of SMED within this context. (b) (5 marks) With reference to the computer aided manufacturing (CAM) system MasterCAM 2017 (c) ( Describe the input data necessary for the generation of a dynamic roughing toolpath (5 marks) () Describe four main CNC operational benefits resulting from the use of a Dynamic Toolpath strategy. 5 marks)Explanation / Answer
3(a) SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Dies) : there is always waste in manufacturing system so new technique developed that is single minute exchange of dies was first developed by Shigeo Shingo, that reduces waste in manufacturing system, It provides a rapid and efficient way of converting a manufacturing process from running the current product to running the next product.
SMED lowers manufacturing cost by reducing downtime and providing smoother startups.
3(b): there are many factor that must be considered during setup of CNC milling machine tool
external tool setup: for exteranl machining operation such as roughing, machning, finishing outside diameter, grooving, tapering etc, in all these type of external operation machine tool is rather small and approaches the part in an opern space with sufficient clearence.
internal tool setup: these are the tool that do majority of work inside the workpiece for example premachine hole, tool in cavity, internal grooving etc.
Objective of SMED: SMED lowers manufacturing cost by reducing downtime and providing smoother startups.
implementation of SMED concept
3(C): (i) dynamic roughing toolpath input parameter
(ii)
