Question
2. The design of a steady state accelerometer measurement device has been proposed based on the deflection of a cantilever beam to measure the acceleration perpendicular to the beam axis. For a chosen beam geometry and material of steel, the deflection vs acceleration relation has been found to be in a suitable ranae for this application. acceleration deflection acceleration For several reasons, an alternate to steel is desired as the beam material Assuming the beam geometry will remain the same, identify the top five most feasible alternative material candidates from the suggested list below (based on the deflection -acceleration requirements) na ia Lead Allous Glasses Ma Allous Engr. Polymers Al Alloys Foam Polymers Woods: Oak, Ash, Pine, Fir, Balsa (parallel to grain) Cork Tin Allous (Hint: determine the material properties that control the deflection acceleration relation and consider the Ashby Charts to identify comparable materials)Explanation / Answer
Here lead alloy can not work because it lacks in physical properties as steel .it has very low strength and can not sustain the load.
Lead will also not work as it is too brittle to undergo the deflection as steel and it will fracture and it does not have linear deflection- acceleration diagram as it is too brittle and have very less toughness.
Material like Mg- alloy and Al-alloy may work .but they have to be imparted with some physical property like steel by adding some alloying element and undergoing any kind of hardening process such as precipitation hardening and other.
Wood may also work but not give same result as steel but can perform the application up to some load.
Agin tin alloy lack of adequate strength to be used as the member but with adding some specific type of alloying element it can be made stronger to be used.
So the top five elemt would be
Mg alloy, Al alloy, polymers, woods and Tim alloys.
