You are employed as an engineer in a company that manufactures chemical products. Your company is quite conscientious in the area of risk management. However, the company has recently bought-out a local chemical firm with questionable interests in safety and risk. Therefore, you have been asked to prepare a plan to identify hazards in that firm’s facility such that upgrading can be undertaken and the acquired plant will then be in line with your company’s policies. What is the general outline of your plan.

The general outline of the plan could be as follows:

Hazardous chemical identification: Firstly we have to look into the raw materials, in-process products and final products and classify them according to its toxicity. During this classification, exposure standards for the workers must also be taken care of. The materials are classified and by proper use of pictograms and safety warnings, the hazardous materials should be properly identified and workers shoud be made aware how to use such materials with extreme care. Use of tags or charts helps workers to identify and follow safety codes during handling of such chemicals/products.

Accidents during machine operations: Accidents occur majorly in indutries due to falls. To avoid such scenario, workers must be adviced to use proper safety gears such as helmets, etc. Electical short circuits could be the major reason of fire in work places. Flammable chemical must be dealt away from electrical equipments. This may help in dealing with risk associated with major fire accidents. Personal protective equipments must be given to workers wherever necessary and workers must be taught of necessity of using such equipments wherever applicable.

Fire and explosion management: Fire alarms must be equipped throughout the industry. If it is already constructed, proper working of the equipments must be ensured. Fire extinguishers must be checked and renewed from time to time. Fire exits must be created wherever necessary for safe exit of workeres. This would help in mitigation measures during some fire accidents.

Training to workers: Workers must be given proper training to make themselves aware of chemicals that they are working with, in day to day work and what are all the safety measures they should be taking for themselves during operations. Also, workers must be given safety trainings and first aid management. Apart from this a person can be seperately nominated for ensuring safety in workplace.

Health care/ Emergency units: It is better to have clinical unit/ emergency unit inside each workplace to deal with sudden accidents. Atleast first aid equipments must be properly maintained in each working units.

Seeking expert guidance: External assistance can be taken for suitable management of the equipments. Also help from previous industry of the engineer can be taken for guidance. This may help in establishing the quality and can cut some time during the entire plan.
