Question

[special relativity]

At the other side of the visible universe (10^10 light years away) we will imagine there is a planet just like ours with a civilization identical to ours. An othersider fellow at rest in that place considers "present time on earth is Spring 2017" Next to him are two bikers: biker A is moving away from earth at 3 m/s and biker B is moving toward earth at 3 m/s. For all of them, their time is Spring 2017. However, when they consider what time it is for us, earthers, they get different conclusions. (a) What is the "present time for earthers" according to biker A? (b) What is the "present time for earthers" according to biker B?

Explanation / Answer

Since the person sitting on that planet considers his time as Spring 2017 and it is 1010 light years away from earth, then from the planet, the present time for earthers is 2017-1010 years, since light will take 1010 years time to reach that planet from earth. Now since both the bikers are moving with very low non-relativistic velocity since the ratio of 3 m/s and 3X108 m/s is very low, therefore, there will be no relativistic correction in the time and both the bikers will consider present time for earthers as 2017-1010 years.
