Question
(when 6 molecules of C(triple bond) O are placed in the 6 boxes of a grid, they can orient only left-to-right and right-to-left. Calculate how many avaliable microstates there are when 4 molecules are facing right and 2 are flipped to the left, and how many are possible when 2 are facing right while 4 are flipped to the left. Then say which state is more prbable( that is , has more microstates).
(if its a linear molecule in two sets of six boxes first set there are 4 molecules pointing to the right and 2 pointing to the left the other set has 4 pointing to the left and two pointing to the right. how many orientation are for each est and which has more microstates?)
Explanation / Answer
6 molecules are placed in 6 boxes of a grid , they are distingusihable objects in the grid
There are total 6 objects
we have two states , left and right
we have 4 - right and 2 left
The pissible Micro states = N! /n1! *n2! = 6!/ 4!* 2! = 15
if we have 2 left and 4 right , the possible micro states is same = 15
both are equally possible
each set has 15 orinetations and both sets have equal number of micro states.
