Question
Problem 5 (15 points A light bulb is connected to two halves of a long, thin wire (similar to the demo shown in class). An electromagnetic plane wave moves past the wire, as shown in the first figure below. a) In what direction is the wave propagating? Please explain your reasoning. Wire Bulb b) Suppose the wire were oriented parallel to the y-axis, as shown. Would the bulb glow in this case? Please explain. c) Suppose instead that the wire were oriented parallel to y-axis as before, but with its bottom end located on the x-axis (i.e. the wire is shifted upward a distance equal to half its length). Would the brightness of the bulb in this case be greater than, less than, or equal to the brightness that it had in part b? Please explain.Explanation / Answer
in the first case the wave is propogating along the x axis. in the second case, current is flowing along the y axis and hence the bulb glows as it is placed along the y axis. the brightness remin the same as there is no change in magnetic flux. in the last case brightness reduces as it is placed at a region where the flux is reduced. hence brightness reduces.
