Question

You are the engineer responsible for reporting to management regarding the safety of the O-rings in the Challenger shuttle just one day prior to scheduled lift-off. You will be part of a longer "final safety check" in which several lead engineers will present the state of the system for which they are responsible. (You are responsible for the booster rockets, which contain the O-rings.)

1- explain what is O-Ring in the challenger shuttle space?

2- what it is used for in a space challenger?

3- why it is safe?

Explanation / Answer

1. O-ring is a torus-shaped ring which is used as a gasket or jacket at the joint between the two parts sealing it. Usually, vulcanized rubber is used as the O-ring.

2. Rubber is used as a shuttle space.

3. Because even if there are deformations in the mounting points, O-ring's elastic nature would accommodate the mechanical parts to seal the joint completely. Also, the deformity of the ring can found out by calculating stress acting on the ring, we can use the appropriate rings for the favourable conditions.
