Question

Hi, I could use some help with getting the basics of these topics down for research - please provide preferably 3 to 4 sources; and just give me the run down on things that I could expand on (on my own) to write about a page on.

This is the topic:

Discuss (a) technical specifications and (b) principles of operation of selected OEM sensors for 2 different biometric applications.

OR (b) compare and contrast numerical identifiers (required or selected data points/characteristics) for at least 2 different biometric methods.

Explanation / Answer

a) Technical specification of OEM biometric sensors includes many things depending on biometric application. For example if we consider finger print sensor then the technical specifications include:

1) Dimensions of the sensor

2) processor used

3) size of the memory

4) type of optical sensor used

5) supply voltage

6) Current consumption

7) Temparature

8) Humidity

9)Capture speed

10) Boot up time

11) Authentication time, rate, method

12) External Interface

13) Data Encryption Method

B) Two biometric applications are finger print scanning and facial recognition.

A fingerprint sensor captures image of fingerprint pattern. The captured image is processed to create a biometric template which is stored and used for matching.

1) Optical & capacitive methods have been used for matching of finger print.

In Optical method, Optical fingerprint involves capturing of digital image using visible light. The top layer of the sensor is touch surface. Below this layer is a phosphor light emitting layer which illuminates the surface of the finger. The light reflected from the finger passes through the phosphor layer to array of solid state pixels which captures a visual image of the fingerprint

2) Another Sensor used is Face detection system:

Face recognition systems are also similar to pattern recognition systems. They extract features and match these with data stored in the database. Face recognition systems perform face detection which typically places a rectangular box around the face in the image. This can be achieved in real-time without any error.
