Modeling and Control Design of a DC motor
General Background of DC motor
DC Motor is a direct current system which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It consists of a current carrying which is connect to supply by means of commutator and brushes. This armature is placed between north and south poles of either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. When direct current is supplied to the armature, mechanical force acts on it due to electromagnetic effect. The construction of a DC motor is such that the direction of current through the armature conductor at all instance is perpendicular to the field. Hence the force acts on the armature conductor in the direction perpendicular to the both uniform field and current is constant. The position of the force on either side of armature is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. And since the two conductors are separated by some distance of the armature turn, the two opposite forces produce a rotational force or torque which results in the rotation of the armature conductor.
Importance of DC motors
The importance of DC motors is largely due to the its variable speed behaviour. When the voltage applied to armature of the DC motor increases the motor speed increases correspondingly. DC motors can develop full torque from base speed, such a constant torque characteristics allows DC motors to be used in wide variety of industrial and robotic applications. This full torque from zero speed is useful when the machine needs to be stopped when fully loaded and then got moving again. So the importance can be summarized as below
