Question

You are asked to estimate the amount of heat that can be stored overnight in a solar-heated building, which has a storage space of 6 m^3. The solar system uses water with antifreeze in the collector, and there are two options for storing the heat overnight. One option is to use water with an allowable temperature change at 30 degrees with a heat of fusion of 329 kj/L. In both instances, a heat exchanger will be necessary in order to meet building code. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the two options

Explanation / Answer

Two options of storing the heat overnight;

The use of adequate thermal energy storage (TES) systems in the building and industrial sector presents high potential in energy conservation.

*Also use of TES can overcome lack of coincidence between the energy supply and demand.

The use of TES system have many advantages are the increase of the overall efficiency and better reliability, but it can also lead to better economics, reducing investment and running costs, and less pollution of the environment and less CO2 emissions.

The different types of TES are;

Option-1: In the case of sensible heat storage systems, energy is stored or extracted by heating or cooling a liquid or a solid, which does not change its phase during this process.

Sensible heat storage systems are simpler in design than latent heat or bond storage systems. However they suffer from the disadvantage of being bigger in size.

Option-2:  Solar Energy Storage Systems; Operation of the system takes place in three steps; charging, storage and removal processes. It is quiet economical method also efficient method to use.
