Question
Refer to Figure 1 for parts a through g. a. Find the antenna's half-power beamwidth in the xz plane. b. Find the antenna's half-power beamwidth in the yz plane. c. How many major lobes are present in the xz plane? d. How many major lobes are present in the yz plane? e. How many minor lobes are present in the xz plane? f. How many minor lobes are present in the yz plane? g. Assume there is only one major lobe in the 3-d antenna power pattern Write a short essay describing the 3-d antenna power pattern. For example, what can be said about the number of lobes, etc.Explanation / Answer
1. a. The angular separation, in which the magnitude of the radiation pattern decreases by 50% from the peak of the main beam, is called Half Power Beam Width.
from the figure1, antenna power patter in xz plane, it is clear that the half power points (a magnitude of 0.5) occur at an angle of 20degrees on either side of the main lobe.
So the half power beam width ( HPBW) in xz plane = 20+20 = 40 degree
b. from the figure1, antenna power patter in yz plane, it is clear that the half power points (a magnitude of 0.5) occur at an angle of 33degrees on either side of the main lobe.
So the half power beam width ( HPBW) in yz plane = 33+33 = 66 degrees
c . In xz plane there is only one major lobe. (the major lobe has a large radiation peak where as minor lobe has small radiation peak)
d. In yz plane also there is only one major lobe. (the major lobe has a large radiation peak where as minor lobe has small radiation peak)
e. In xz plane there are two minor lobes or side lobes. (we can count from the figure1 xz plane)
f. In yz plane there are four minor lobes or side lobes. (we can count from the figure yz plane)
