One of the ways size is important is in the manufacturing of microprocessor chips. Signals that are exchanged between devices on the chip surface must travel short distances, but even so, it takes time for the signals to get from one component to another. For example, two transistors separated by only 100 nm (nanometers) require around 0.0005 pico seconds (10-12 seconds) for the signal to be transmitted between them. The distance and the resulting signal propagation time, is one of the factors that limit the operating speed of the processor. If the transistors could be made smaller, the distance between them would decrease, allowing an increase in the operating speed of the processor.
