Question

6) Explain the following types of chains (In other words, tell me what kind of chain these are) a. No. 41 b. No. 60H 7) What are two types of chin drives? (Not two types of chains but chain drives) 8) Chain sag: Explain how it is determined. 9) How do you place the proper chain sag for both types of chain drives? 10) What are the two main components that make up a silent chain? 11) Sprocket idler: Name two purposes 12) Engine oil: 5W30-In your own words, what does this mean? (This may take some research. Simple short answers are ok, as long as they fully explain the answer) a. Define viscosity b. What does each number and letter represent or mean? c. How were these numbers and letter determined? Hint: What is viscosity dependent on?) d. Why do you think this is more popular than most other types of engine oil?

Explanation / Answer

6) a) The No.41 chain is a Machinery roller chain. '41' is the chains ANSI no. and it will have a pich of about 0.500 inch and a Roller diameter of 0.306 inch. They have a pin diameter of 0.141 inch. The average tensile strength will be 2392 lb and maximum working load is 463 lb. It will also have an approximate weight of 0.273lb/ft. ANSI is the standard organization which gives the standard of these chains. These chains are used for power transmission in mechanical devices.
b) This chain is also a roller chain used in mechanical devices for power transmission. No.60H is the ANSI no. which gives the standard of the chain according to ANSI standards. These chains have a pitch of 0.750 inch which is higher than No.41 chains. They have a roller diameter of 0.469 inch and a pin diameter of 0.234.

7) The two types of chain drives are:
- Roller chain drives- These chain drives use roller chains for transmission of power and have alternative roller links and these roller links have two side bars.
-Pintle chain drives- These chain drives use pintle chains as drive chains to achieve higher speeds and can transmit power essentially.

8) Chain sag can be determined using computer aided analysis as other methods have high error percentages. Also chain sags are variable and maximum and minimum sag can be determined using calculations. Also it can be measured by placing a straight edge on the slack side of the chain drive. This way the amount of sag from the straight edge to the chain can be determined.
