Question

The Earths radius is 6.37 x 10^6 m. The Moon's mass is 7.36 x 10^22 kg and the distance between the center of the Moon and the center of the Earth is 3.82 x 10^8 m. Richard (on the left side of Earth) and Rodney (on the right side of Earth) each have a mass of 101.0000 kg and a weight due to just w=mg of 990.8100 N. Find the apparent weight (normal force, Fn) of a) Richard and b) Rodney due to the gravitational forces of both the Earth (G= 6.67 x 10^-11 N*m^2/kg^2) and the Moon.
The moon is to the right of the Earth.

Explanation / Answer

had a typo for part b
a) Fn = mg + F moon= 990.81 + 6.67E-11*101*7.36E22/(3.82E8+6.37E6)^2=990.813287
b) now mg and Fmoon point opposite ways and you are closer to the moon
Fn = mg - F moon=990.81 - 6.67E-11*101*7.36E22/(3.82E8-6.37E6)^2=990.8064860 N
