Question
In this same problem, I want to make sure I'm understanding.
The magnetic field produced by wire 1 circulates around the wire coming out of the page above the wire and entering the page below the wire, so wire 2 experiences a magnetic field pointing into the page with a magnitude of B1=(mew)(I1)/ (2)(pi)(d1)
The magnetic field produced by wire 2 circulates around the wire coming outof the page above the wire and entering the page below the wire, so wire 1 experiences a magnetic field coming out of the page with a magnitude of B2=(mew)(I2)/ (2)(pi)(d2)
What I dont understand is how the force from wire 1 on wire 2 is downward and the force on wire one from wire 2 is upward.
Using the RHR for wire 1 I point my thumb towards the current and curl my fingers up because the field comes out of the page above the wire and into the page below the wire, but then my index finger point up like force is upwards.
The same thing happens with wire 2, but I know both forces cannot be upward sunce currents are in the same direction, so what am I missing? If both wires have something coming out above the wire and in below the wire, the same direction, how can the directions of the forces be different?
Explanation / Answer
According to right hand rule if thumb shows current direction curl of fingers shows magnetic filed direction.here the magnetic field lines are cirles around the wire.the tangent to the circle gives us the direction of magnetic filed. for upper wire when you cirl your fingers at mid point the fingers goes in to the paper plane. for lower wire, if you curl your fingers, the come out of the paper plane. force on lower wire due to i1 is upward. And force on upper wire due i2 is down ward. F = i * (L cross B)..........take ur fingers in the direction of i,then curl ur fingers in the direction of B then thumb shows the magnetic force direction.
