PLEASE TYPE YOUR RESPONSE

You are working with a medical non-profit organization is starting a campaign to combat Type 2 diabetes among poor single mothers in Chicago. Recent studies have found that this is a particularly high risk group, and you are looking for ways to combat it. One factor that your group has found is that individuals who are under high levels of stress in their lives are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Having highlighted life stresses as a particular risk factor, your organization wants to find a way to address it.

1. What interventions might reduce stress?

2. If you cannot change the stress levels, come up with an idea for modifying one of your previous interventions that would have increased stress to have a neutral or improving effect on stress levels.

Explanation / Answer

1. The interventions that might reduce stress are to enable the poor single mothers to cope up with poverty. This would require acquisition of funds and providing them to the single mothers. Along with poverty, the various reasons for stress includes issues relating to households, food security, illness, availability of scarce jobs, insecurity, violence, unsafe neighbourhoods. The other kind of intervention would be to teach the single mothers to educate themselves. Even if they are busy with household chores during the day, they can attend classes at night colleges to educate groups. Bringing together all of the single mothers and to motivate themselves to stay as one unit and work. The intervention should focus on coping up with stress related to problems both related to society levels as well as emotional levels. Counsellor to be appointed who would take up small talks or sessions for these women; understanding their problems; dreams, aspirations and working towards their development. Facilities for their children including proper mid day meals, child care and education might reduce stress levels to an extent.

2. Not all single mothers would be willing to study at their age; this would require clustering them in small groups and engaging in various other activities like tailoring to painting, creation of handicraft materials, jewelery which would bring out the talent of the individual mothers. This would also prove beneficial to the mothers who would be egoistic if handed over money directly. They can be engaged and taught to do organic farming in their small plots of land where they would get fresh farm produce of better quality and provide them additional employment.
