Question

Two masses of 4.8 kg and 2 kg are suspended by a pulley with a radius of 12 cm and a mass of 5 kg as shown in the figure. The cord has negligible weight and causes the pulley to rotate without slipping.

a) what is the angular acceleration of the pulley? treat the pulley as a uniform disk. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s^2. answer in units of rads/s^2

b) What is the magnitude of the tension in the cord on the right-handed side? Answer in units of N

c) The masses start from rest 3.97 m vertically apart. What is the speed of the right-hand mass when the two masses pass each other? answer in units of m/s

Explanation / Answer

solving these three equations , we get;

a= 2.95 m/s2 ,

T1= 25.5 N,

T2= 38.75 N

a). angular acceleration = a/r= 24.583 rad/s2

b).T1 = 25.5 N

c). v^2 - u^2 = 2a* x

=> v^2 - 0 = 2* 2.95 *3.97

=> v= 4.84 m/s
