Question
Will the energy of a photon that ionizes a hydrogen atom from teh ground state be larger than, smaller than, or equal to, the energy of a photon that ionizes another hydrogen atom from the first excited state (n=2)? Explain.
Below is the answerr (the link), but I do not know how the numbers were gotten. Can someone PLEASE help me understand how to arrive at these numbers and how to calculate this. i am struggling so much and need this foundation in order to naswer my other questions.
Explanation / Answer
According to the theory quantum mechanics, an electron bound to an atom can not have any value of energy, rather it can only occupy certain states which correspond to certain energy levels. The formula defining the energy levels of a Hydrogen atom are given by the equation: E = -E0/n2, where E0 = 13.6 eV (1 eV = 1.602
