Please just answer the questions clearly in sentances
B) An atom in the ground state absorbs a photon, then emits a photon with a wavelength of 1240 nm. What conclusion can you draw about the energy of the photon that was absorbed?
C) An atom in the ground state has a collision with an electron, then emits a photon with a wavelength of 1240 nm. What conclusion can you draw about the initial kinetic energy of the electron?
Explanation / Answer
B) energy = hc/ lamda = 6.627 * 10^-34 * 3 *10^8 / ( 1240 * 10^-9 * 1.6 *10^-19 ) = 0.01 * 10^2 = 1 ev
factor of 1.6*10^-19 is divided to obtain energy in electron volt
energy corresponding to 1240 nm is 1 ev
so, incident energy should be more than 1 ev
clearly you can see that.
energy of photon should be E3 -E1 = -1-(-4) = 3 ev
C) inital kinetic energy will be difference of E3-E1 = 3ev
so electron K.E is 3 ev.
first electron is in ground state, then it jumps to n=3, from where it jumps to n=2 by emitting a photon of 1240 nm
