Question

You decide to make a Galilean thermometer out of a clear plastic pipe, some ping-pong balls, sand and glue. As part of your preparation you will need to work out the density of water between 20Â °C and 50Â °C at 2Â ° C intervals. Use the calculator that can be found here http://www.csgnetwork.com/h2odenscalc.html to help you. From your data calculate the mass of sand, in grams, that needs to be put into each ping-pong ball. Using a spreadsheet will make answering this question much easier.

State your assumptionsÂ

Explanation / Answer

the lower temperature is Ti = 20 oC

the upper temperature is Tf = 50 oC

the temperature intervals are 2 oC,that is

T1 = 22 oC,T2 = 24 oC,.....

the density of water is

p = 1000 kg/m^3

the volume of ping pong ball is

V = (4/3)pi * r^3

let m be the mass of sand

or m = p1 * V

where p1 is density of ping pong ball
