Question

In the notes I stated that a moving charge will have an electric field. This electric field will produce a magnetic field that is out of phase with the electric field. Suppose, the magnetic field will have a field strength of 1.2 x 10 -3 T and the electric field will have a field strength of 4.6x 10 ³ N/C. If a positive charge with a value of 1.8 µC propagates perpendicular to both fields, at a speed of 3.1 x106 m/s.

What is the size of the net force that the positive charge will feel?

Please show all formulas used.

Explanation / Answer

This is a trick question. If the positive charge propogates with a constant velocity, then there can be no force on it. We know that F = ma. Since there is a constant velocity, there is no acceleration. Since acceleration = 0, then F = 0N
