Question

[ This is question 8.95 in Walker 4th ]

Consider the system shown in Figure 8-31. (See below forbrief description)

A) What initial speed v is required if the blocks m1 = 2.4kg andm2= 1.1kg are to travel a distance d = 6.5 cm before coming to rest? Assume the coefficient of kinetic friction between m1and the table top is uk = 0.25.

B) Is the work done on m2 by the rope positive, negative, or zero?Explain

C) Calculate the work done on m2 by the rope.

I'll try to explain the picture as best as I can for those whodon't have the textbook. But I'll post the answersbelow. I'm just having trouble figuring out how to actuallydo the question is all.

A) 0.79 m/s
B) Positive
C) 0.36 J

The m1 is on the table top has a velocity to the left. On theright of m1 is a rope attached to m2 via a pulley system. Theheight of the table top is h and m2 has a velocity up.

Thanks in advance.

Explanation / Answer

0.5m1v^2-0.25*m1*g*0.065+0.5m2v2^2=m2*g*0.065 from that we ca calculate v=0.7866m/sec positive as the change in energy is -ve change in energy is negative of work done by all forces for the qstn take diff of m2 initila kinetc energy and final potential energy work done=1.1*9.8*0.065-0.5*1.1*0.79^2=0.359joules
