Karen's mother should get vaccinated with influenza shot. Influenza is a seasonal virus that causes flu. Due to the extensive genetic variation of the virus, a fresh strain attacks every season. So, everybody must be vaccinated every season. Old people >50 yrs of age must be vaccinated as they are immunocompromised and are at high risk of developing the disease.

It is reported that 71-85% of deaths due to influenza occurred in people belonging to the age group of >65 yrs.
