Question

10. If the dots represent the relative concentrations of solutes both inside and outside of the cell: The above cell is immersed in a hypotonic/isotonic/hypertonie (circle one) environment. a. b. Based on your answer to the above question, you know that water will: leave the cell/enter the cell/experience no net movement (circle one) By what transport mechanism does this cell maintain a higher solute concentration inside the cell compared to the outside? In other words, what prevents the solutes from eventually reaching equilibrium? c. 1. An animal cell is happiest in an isotonie environment. Explain why (what is overall direction of water movement and why is that good for the animal cell?). 12. A plant cell is happiest in a hypotonic environment. Explain why (what is overall direction of water movement and why is that good for the plant cell?). 13. Explain why neither animal nor plant cells are happiest in a hypertonic environment. What is the overall directions of water movement and why is that not good for any cell?

Explanation / Answer

10.a:-the above cell is immersed in a hypotonic environment.

b:-the water will enter the cell because water moves from hypotonic to hypertonic environment.

c:-by diffusion or passive transport the cell maintain a highly solute concentration inside the cell.

11.An animal cell is happiest in an isotonic solution, because the solute concentration inside the cell and the outside of the cell is equal,so no net flow of molecules doea not occur,i.e no direction of movement of water molecules so no osmosis,So no swelling occurs and no plasmolysis occurs,so the cell can't die due to bursting or plasmolysed condition.

12.A plant cell is happiest in a hypotonic environment,so endosmosis will occur in the cell which will be so much helpful in seed germination.Net flow of water will be from hypotonic to hypertonic i.e from outside to inside.

13.Both plant cell and animal cell are not happy in hypertonic solution, because exosmosis will occur and due to yhis exosmosis ,the cell will get plasmolysed and finally dies

the net flow of water movement will occur from inside to the outside.
