Question
When an x-ray beam is scattered off the planes of a crystal, the scattered beam creates an interference pattern. This phenomenon is called Bragg scattering. For an observer to measure an interference maximum, two conditions have to be satisfied:
2dcos(%u03B8)=m%u03BBfor m=1,2,%u2026.
The path difference 2dcos(%u03B8) can be determined from the diagram (Figure 1) . The second condition is k
nown as the Bragg condition.
Part A:
Part B:
Find the angle %u03B82 at which you will find a second maximum (3 sig figs).
Explanation / Answer
2d sin theta = mL
d = 1*0.25nm/sin(90-66)
d= 0.153 nm
b. sintheta = mL/2d = 2*0.25/0.307
sin theta =1.69
theta = 1.69 that menas second maxima does not exixts
