A01. Find the location of the center of gravity of the man lying on the board in the diagram below, showing carefully how you arrived at your answer and expressing your answer as a distance measured from the point where his heels are in contact with the board. His heels are in contact with the board directly above the right hand scale, and his head is in contact with the board directly above the left hand scale. Both scales are set to zero before he gets on the board, and it is known that the center of gravity of the board lies halfway between the two scales. The distance between the two scales is 180cm.

Explanation / Answer

Application of archimedis principle

Weight of the ship = buyoncy force

m*g = density of sea water*Volume displaced* g

m = density of sea water*Volume displaced

6*10^8 = 1020*Vdis

Vdis = 5.88*10^5 m^3

Vdis = bottom area of the ship *height of ship under water

bottom area of the ship = 300*80 = 2400m^2

height of ship under water = h

h = 5.88*10^5 / 24000

h = 24.5 m

It is 24.5 m below the sea level
