Question

Determine the mass flow rate of water through a pipe with a diameter of 2.3 cm when speed at which water travels through the pipe is 1.7 m/s.
kg/s

You wish to fill a child's inflatable wading pool by using a garden hose. The hose you are using has an inside diameter of 3.0 cm and water travels though it at a speed of 1.5 m/s. If the pool is circular with an inside diameter of 1.5 m and you wish to fill it to a depth of 47 cm, determine the time (in minutes) required to fill the pool to this depth.
min

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

Volume flow rate = Av

V = (pi)(.0115)^2(1.7)

V = 7.063 X 10^-4 m^3/s

Since there are 1000 kg/m^3, that is .706 kg/s

Part B)
V = Av = (pi)(.015)^2(1.5) = 1.06 X 10^-3 m^3/s

The volume of water needed is pir^2h = (pi)(.75^2)(.47) = .830 m^3

Time = .830/1.06 X 10^-3 = 783 sec

That is 13.1 min
