Question
8) The spheres in problem 7 now undergo an inelastic collision, where after the collision they stick together. For each situation, find the final velocity of the system and calculate the energy dissipated during the collision.
THIS IS QUESTION 7... I ONLY NEED ANSWER TO QUESTION 8
7)A metal sphere with the mass of 1 kg is moving to the right at 2 m/s. Another sphere with the mass of 2 kg is moving to the left at a speed of 4 m/s. (a) Calculate the final velocities of the spheres after they collide perfectly elastically. (b) Answer the same question if the sphere moving to the left now only has a speed of 1 m/s but still the same mass as previously. (c) Redo part (b) assuming that both spheres move to the right, with the less massive sphere originally trailing the more massive one.
Explanation / Answer
let them move together in the right direction after the inelastic collision
m1v1 -m2v2 = (m1+m2)v
1*2 - 2 * 4 = 3 * V
V = -2 m/s
ie they move together in the left direction with speed of 2 m/s
energy dissipated= 1/2 m1v1^2 + 1/2 m2v2^2 - 1/2 (m1+m2)v^2
= 1/2 ( 4+32 - 12)
= 12 J
