Try to explain what you see using the concept of osmosis. Is water hypertonic typotonicor isotonic the co Is water hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic to the onion skin cels?y o What happens to the cells when they are placed in water? o What is the direction of water movement? Is 0.3 M Sucrose hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic to the cells? o What happens to the cells when they are placed in 0.3 M Sucrose? o What is the direction of water movement? Is 2.0 M Sucrose hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic to the cells? o What happens to the cells when they are placed in 2.0 M Sucrose? o What is the direction of water movement? .

Explanation / Answer

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of their higher concentration to an area of their lower concentration.

Water is hypotonic to the cells, cells shrink when placed in water, direction of water movement is from the outside solution to within the cells, hence endosmosis.

0.3 M Sucrose solution is isotonic to the cells, cells undergo no change when placed in 0.3 M Sucrose solution, the direction of water movement is in both directions however neither direction dominates because of existing equilibrium.

2.0 M Sucrose solution is hypertonic to the cells, cells swell up when placed in 2.0 M Sucrose solution, direction of water movement is from within the cells to the 2.0 M Sucrose solution outside, also called exosmosis.
