Question

You must quickly determine the porosity of the soil on-site without taking it to the

lab. You extract a soil core within the contaminated region. The sample tube which

contains the soil core has a total volume of 16.64 in3. The soil core within the sample

tube contains soil and pure phase TCE which occupies all of the pores space between the

soil grains. Using a scale, you weigh the sample tube containing the soil core and

determine it is 0.527 kg. Previous soil tests at the site have determined that the bulk

density (?b) of the soil is 1.52 g/cm3. You look up the density of TCE (?TCE) in a table

and determine that it is 1.462 g/cm3. What is the porosity of the soil?

little lost as to where to start im doing conversions but the im not sure about how to exactly execute the problem.

Explanation / Answer

what you have= sample tube volume 16.64in3

tube weight+soil wt.= 527gm (w2)

previous data

Bulk density= 1.52g/cm3

density=1.462g/cm3

first of all we need to get weight of (soil+water filled till top) =(w3)

done on field now get sample safe

and weigh sample tube empty (w1)

now sample tube filled with water= (w4)

now we have w1, w2, w3, w4

for apparent porosity

use

(w2-w1)/(w3-w4)

it's pycnometric method we use on college.
