Question
9) Cadherin proteins help animal cells stick (adhere) to each other. Choose which statement about cadherin in cancer cells that are metastasizing (spreading) throughout a patient's body is most likely correct. 19) A) Cadherin proteins in metastasizing cancer cells are likely to have mutations that make them less "sticky B) Mutations in cadherin proteins are unlikely to affect the metastasizing of cancer cells C) Mutations in cadherin proteins accumulate at a constant rate that can be measured by a molecular clock D) Cadherin proteins in metastasizing cancer cells are likely to have mutations that make them more "sticky"Explanation / Answer
Option A is correct
A) Cadherin proteins in metastasizing cancer cells are likely to have muations that make them less "sticky".
Explanation :
Cadherin proteins are a type of CAM ( Cell Adhesion Molecule) that plays an important role in the formation of adherence junctions between the cells, in a calcium dependent manner. Cadherin is a type I transmembrane protein and depends upon calcium for their function.
E-cadherin protein is essential for epithelial cell junctions ( i.e cell-cell contact). E-cadherin works as tumor suppressor gene which suppresses the growth of cancer. So, any loss of function mutation in cadherin, causes the transition of benign tumor (localized) to invasive form of cancer i.e metastatic cancer.
Loss of function mutation in cadherin results in progression of cancer by increase proliferation, invasion / metastasis of cells.
