Question
26. ld plant) celi with an i ea (plant) cell with an internal solute concentration of 300 mosM/L is placed in a salt solution with a concentration of 1200 mosMI/L. What will most likely happen to the Elodea cell and why? Practice using the terms hypertonic, etc. in your explanation. 27. What would you expect to happen to an Elodea cell that is placed in distilled water (0 mosM/L) solution? Why? Practice using the terms hypertonic, etc. in your explanation. 28. How would the above situation be different for an animal cell or other cell without a cell wall?Explanation / Answer
Ans 26 :
Whenever a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution it shrinks , and when it is placed in a hypotonic solution it swells up.
Since here the cell has concentration of 300 mosM/L ,and the salt solution has the concentration of 1200 mosM/L , so the salt solution is hypertonic to the cell.
In such a case the cell will loose its water to the solution through the process called as osmosis and become shrinked.
