Question

Suppose that the swimmer in the figure below has a swimming speed relative to the water of 0.42 m/s, while the speed of the current is 2.5 m/s.  If it takes the swimmer 190 s to cross the river, how wide is the river?  m

Suppose that the swimmer in the figure below has a swimming speed relative to the water of 0.42 m/s, while the speed of the current is 2.5 m/s. If it takes the swimmer 190 s to cross the river, how wide is the river? m An airplane has a velocity relative to the air of 187 m/s in a westerly direction. If the wind has a speed relative to the ground of 57 m/s directed to the north, what is the speed of the plane relative to the ground? m/s

Explanation / Answer

distance = speed*time

= 0.42*190

= 79.8 m

Vaeroplane = -187i

Vwind = 57j

V = -187i + 57j

= sqrt(187^2 + 57^2) = 195.494 m/s
