Question

The 8 lb. collar slides on the smooth rod. At the the instant shown it is at A where x= 1.5 ft and has a speed of 9 ft/s. If the spring to which it is attached has an unstretched length of 1 ft and a stiffness k=6 lb/ft, determine the (a) normal force on the collar and (b) the acceleration of the collar.

Explanation / Answer

y = 8 - x^2/2

at x =1.5 , y = 6.875 ft

l' = (6.875^2 + 1.5^2) = 7.04 ft

change in length = ( 8 - 7.04) = 0.963 ft

a) N = kx + mg6.875/7.04 - mv^2/r

N = 6 x 0.963 + 8 x 32.17 x 6.875/7.04   - 8 x 9^2/7.04

N = 165.06

b) a = g x 1.5 / 7.04 = 6.85 ft/s^2
