Question

At a point a distance x from a point charge, the electric field has a magnitude of 100V/m and it points away from the charge.  If I increase the distance by 2m the electric field has a magnitude 50V/m.  What was the original distance x?   At a point a distance x from a point charge, the electric field has a magnitude of 100V/m and it points away from the charge.  If I increase the distance by 2m the electric field has a magnitude 50V/m.  What was the original distance x?

Explanation / Answer

kq/x^2 = 100 V/m kq/(x+2)^2 = 50 V/m => 2*x^2 = (x+2)^2 => x^2 - 4 - 4x = 0 => x = 4.83 m
