Please watch the following video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9ap3Iimimk entitled "The Biological Basis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome". Courtesy of: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) 5635 Fishers Lane, MSC 9304 Bethesda, MD 20892-9304
There are several other videos in the stream at the right of the screen if you are interested in learning more about FAS. For this discussion I would like for you to:
1) Comment on this video (on this discussion board, not on Youtube). Think about what is involved in cell communication that lead to fetal alcohol syndrome.
2) Find another complication that can arise in pregnancy due to the woman's behavior or age during pregnancy. (Please no repeats!)
3) How can decisions or behaviors committed by the father contribute to the health of the unborn child? Does the father's nutrition matter? How about his age?
4) How does stress affect the unborn child?
5) Do you have any helpful hints for any prospective mothers out there on how to ensure the healthiest pregnancy possible (aside from genetics of course)?
6) Comment on at least two other student's posts.
Explanation / Answer
It is sad to know that the child is affected by FAS because of the ignorant mothers. Thankfully, due to research and National Organization for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, DC, these mothers are able to undertand what their child is going through, and, hence, they are able to help their child. Cell commumnication is effectively maintained and performed by proteins. These proteins might be affected by alcohol due to alcohol consumption by the mother, thus, leading to FAS. Various complication can arise due to the woman's behaviour or age during pregnancy. Due to woman's behaviour, such as chronic hypertension, smoking, etc. the unborn child and the gestation is affected. Chronic hypertension leads to preterm delivery and infant death. Smoking during pregnancy leads to pregnancy complications such as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, and premature labour. Increase in the woman's age leads to genetic abnormalities in the fetus, such as Down Syndrome and Turner Syndrome. Father's behaviour also contributes to the health of the unborn child. Males, who are heavy drinkers or have drinking habit, are at increased risk of having low sperm production or sperms with mutations. As a result, the female partner is either not able to conceive or if conceived, the baby will have genetic abnormalities leading to improper growth and development. Also, the unborn child is affected due to passive smoking by mother because of their partner who are smokers. Nutrition is required for healthy sperm production. If defective sperm fertilizes the ovum, it can lead to birth defects and genetic abnormalities in the child. Similarly, age also affects how healthy the sperm would be. As the age of father increases, higher is the risk for the child to be born with autism. The child might also be affected with schizophrenia during later stage of life. Stress felt by pregnant woman for long period leads to chronic hypertension, gestational diabetes etc. As a result, it might lead to premature birth, infant death, low blood sugar or jaundice in the baby, etc.
