Question
ACTIVITY 6- INHERITANCE 6. Vampire bats land on the backs of cattle and feed upon their blood (without killing them). The bats hold on to the cows using their jaws and long claws. Claw length is inherited in a Mendelian fashion in bats. Long claws (L) are dominant to short claws (1). Two long clawed bats produce four offspring one with long claws and three with short claws. Has there been some infidelity on the female's part? Y/N] Use a Punnett square to illustrate your answer. [Hint: consider what the genotype of the short-clawed offspring tells you about the parents.]Explanation / Answer
Hi,
Answer is Yes.
The Long claw is dominant to short claw. That means when two bats of long claw mate, more offsprings will be of long claw. This can be illustated as below.
Let long claw is coded by L, and short claw is coded by l.
The long clawed bats can have genotype LL or Ll. The short claw genotype is ll.
Parents: LL x LL
We will get all long claw.
Even if we assume that the parents are heterozygotes:
Ll x Ll
We get LL, Ll, lL and ll offsprings. in ratio 3:1::long:short
LL long claw
So we get 3 long and 1 short claw.
In both possibilities, we get more of long claw. So it appears the infidaility on female part.
The appears of short claw among offsprings suggests that the possible male partner can be of genotype - ll.
L l LLL long claw
