When the parachute opens, the canister falls with a constant vertical velocity of 5.0 m/s. When the parachute is open, the canister is also blown by a 1.5 m/s breeze blowing to the East. (During the first 5 seconds the canister is essentially unaffected by the wind)

How much time passes after the release of the canister until it reaches the ground?

Explanation / Answer

distance travelled in first 5 secs = 0.5*9.8*5^2 = 122.5 m

so distance left = 1000- 122.5 = 877.5 m

he travels this distance with onstant speed of 5m/s,

so time taken to travel 877.5 m = 877.5/5 = 175.5 secs

so total time taken = 5+175.5 = 180.5 secs


PS: 1.5 m/s wind doesnt effect the time because its in east direction. It effects the horizontal displacement.
