Question

                    A: You know the name for the shape of the path a projectile follows when there is no air resistance. You will now work out the formula for it.

                    Give the height of the object 'y' as a function of the horizontal position 'x', rather than as a function of time 't'.

                    Express your answer in terms of Vo, sin(theta), cos(theta), and g. For simplicity take Xo and Yo to be zero.

                    B: Solution to Question A can be used even if the ground ove which the projectile flies is not flat.

                    Give 'y' in terms of 'x' for an object launched (from Xo = Yo = 0) at sqrt(98) m/s, 45 degrees up from the horizontal.

                    With no air resistance, will this object hit a target that is 8.0 meters away horizontally, and 1.6 m above the ground?

                                     Please explain with steps and equations, thank you so much before hand!

Explanation / Answer

A)u--> initial speed
theta--> angle of projection

X = u^2*sin(2*theta)/g

Y = u^2*sin^2(theta)/2*g

Y/X = 2*sin(theta)*cos(theta)/sin^2(theta)

Y/X = 2*cot(theta)

Y = 2*X*cot(theta)

B) Y = 2*1.6*cot(45) = 3.2 m

Y is not equal to 8 m

it will not hit the target
