Question
A balloon carrying a basket is descending at a constant velocity of 20.0m/s . A person in the basket throws a stone with an initial velocity of 15.0m/s horizontally perpendicular to the path of the descending balloon, and 8.00s later this person sees the rock strike the ground. (See the figure below.)(Figure 1)
How high was the balloon when the rock was thrown out?
How far horizontally does the rock travel before it hits the ground?
At the instant the rock hits the ground, how far is it from the basket?
Explanation / Answer
so initially stone will have 15 m/s in horizontal and 20 m/s in vertical downwards.
in vertical using h =u t + at^2 /2
h = 20 x 8 + 9.8 x 8^2 /2 =473.6 m
d = ux.t = 15 x 8 =120m
after 8 sec ballon is 473.6 - 20x8 = 313.6 m high .
distance =sqrt(x^2 + y^2) = sqrt(120^2 + 313.6^2) = 335.78 m
