Question

A device has a 100 g wooden shuttle that is pulled horizontally along a square frictionless wooden rail by an elastic band. The shuttle is released when the elastic band has 6.4 N tension at a 45 degrees angle. What is the magnitude of the intial acceleration of the shuttle? Please i need detailed answer. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

because the block can only accelerate in the x direction, the only part of the tension that matters is the x component.

because Fx is the cosine of the hypoteneus or the elastic band, we take 6.4N*cos(45) to get F=4.525N

Then apply this to F=ma to get

(4.525N)=(.1kg)a

so a=(4.525N)/.1kg

a=45.25 m/s^2
