Question
My professor gives us these "no-question" problems, where we have to find all of the forces, velocities, accelerations, etc... so I will copy the image of the problem here to make it easier to understand.
The device allows novices to ski downhill at reduced speeds. The block has a mass of 15 kg and the skier has a mass of 70 kg. THe coefficient of friction is (0.05, 0.04). The skier starts from rest at the top of a 30 m, 20 degree slope.
I am having issues incorporating the coefficent of friction into the problem....do I take each component to get a total value for the coefficient of friciton?
Explanation / Answer
use coefficient of kinetic friction = 0.04
in (0.05 , 0.04) one is static friction coefficient & one is kinetic friction coefficient. (these are not x or y component because coefficients are not vectors)
as we know that ;
static friction coefficient > kinetic friction coefficient
so here,
static friction coefficient = 0.05
& kinetic friction coefficient = 0.04
you just use 0.04
