Question

Hi i need some help with this extra credit lab

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/collision-lab

Analysis:

1.       A collision in which two bodies remain joined together after the collision is referred to as  elastic/inelastic/conservative

2.       A 0.5 kilogram cart moving at 0.360 m/s has how much momentum? ______________kg m/s

3.       If the above 0.5kg cart was to bounce back and return with a velocity of -0.240 m/s, what is its change in momentum?___

4.        How fast must a 0.25 kg cart be traveling to have a momentum of 0.450 kgm/s? ______________

5.       A 0.230 kg baseball is thrown with a speed of 41 m/s. If the ball comes to rest in the catcher

Explanation / Answer

(1) Inelastic collision

(2) Momentum = m*v=0.5*0.360=0.18 kg m/s

(3) Change in momentum = m(v2-v1)=0.5*(-0.240-0.360)=-0.3 kgm/s

(4) 0.25*v=0.450 so velocity is v=0.45*4=1.8 m/s

(5) Favg= change in momentum/time taken= 0.23*(41-0)/0.085 = 110.94 N

(6) By conservation of momentum principle.

0=65*2-55*x

x=2.3636 m/s

(7) The total momentum is 0.25*0.31-0.5*0.22 =-0.0325 kgm/s

(8) by conservation of momentum

0.25*0.31-0.5*0.22=(0.25+0.5) V

V= -0.0433
