Question

The gate in the figure below, which is 2.00 m wide and 1.00 m tall, is supported by hinges and a guy wire. Find the torque resulting from each of the following forces about an axis through point P. (Torque is positive if its direction is counterclockwise and negative if its direction is clockwise.)

F1 = 69.6 N F2 = 85.5 N F3 = 184 N F4 = 105 N
The gate in the figure below, which is 2.00 m wide and 1.00 m tall, is supported by hinges and a guy wire. Find the torque resulting from each of the following forces about an axis through point P. (Torque is positive if its direction is counterclockwise and negative if its direction is clockwise.)

Explanation / Answer

since torque = F*r*sin(theta) ,where r= perpendicular distance between F and point(axis) , theta= angle between r and f vectors.

(1) T=0, as r=0.

(2) T=85.5*2*sin(30) = 85.5 (counterclockwise.)

(3) T=184*1*sin(90) = -184(clockwise)

(4) T=105*1*sin(53) = 83.86 (counterclockwise) ans.
